Materials Needed
Before we start, let’s gather all the necessary materials. You’ll need:
- Tin Cans: You can use small to medium – sized tin cans. Make sure they are clean and dry. You can find these in your pantry or at a local thrift store.
- Wax: There are different types of wax available, such as paraffin wax, soy wax, or beeswax. Paraffin wax is a popular choice as it is easy to work with and has a long burn time.
- Spiral Wick: The spiral wick is what gives this candle its unique look and burn pattern. You can purchase spiral wicks from candle – making supply stores or online.
- Wick Holder: A wick holder is essential to keep the wick in place while the wax is melting and setting.
- Double Boiler: A double boiler is used to melt the wax safely. You can make a makeshift double boiler by placing a smaller pot inside a larger pot filled with water.
- Fragrance Oil (Optional): If you want to add a pleasant scent to your candle, you can use fragrance oils. There are a wide variety of scents available, such as lavender, vanilla, or cinnamon.
- Dye (Optional): You can add dye to the wax to give your candle a specific color. Wax dyes are available in liquid or chip form.
- Thermometer: A thermometer is used to monitor the temperature of the wax. This is important to ensure that the wax is at the right temperature for pouring.
- Scissors: You’ll need scissors to cut the wick to the appropriate length.
Step 1: Prepare the Tin Cans
The first step is to prepare the tin cans. Wash the cans thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris. Then, dry them completely. You can also remove the labels from the cans using a label remover or by soaking the cans in warm, soapy water.
Once the cans are clean and dry, you can decorate them if you like. You can paint the cans, add stickers, or wrap them with decorative paper. This will give your candles a more personalized touch.
Step 2: Prepare the Wick
Cut the spiral wick to the appropriate length. The length of the wick should be about 1 – 2 inches longer than the height of the tin can. Attach the wick to the wick holder. You can do this by threading the wick through the small hole in the wick holder and then securing it with a knot.
Place the wick holder with the wick in the center of the tin can. Make sure the wick is straight and centered. You can use a pencil or a chopstick to hold the wick in place while you pour the wax.
Step 3: Melt the Wax
Fill the bottom pot of the double boiler with water and place it on the stove over medium heat. Place the wax in the top pot of the double boiler. Stir the wax constantly with a wooden spoon or a heat – resistant spatula as it melts.
Use the thermometer to monitor the temperature of the wax. For paraffin wax, the ideal pouring temperature is between 135°F and 145°F (57°C and 63°C). If you’re using soy wax, the pouring temperature is usually between 120°F and 130°F (49°C and 54°C).
Step 4: Add Fragrance and Dye (Optional)
Once the wax has reached the appropriate temperature, you can add fragrance oil and dye if you want. Add the fragrance oil according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually, you’ll add about 1 – 2 teaspoons of fragrance oil per pound of wax.
If you’re using dye, add a small amount at a time and stir well until you achieve the desired color. Remember that the color will be slightly lighter when the wax cools.
Step 5: Pour the Wax
Slowly pour the melted wax into the tin can, being careful not to spill. Pour the wax around the wick, making sure to fill the can to the desired level. Leave about 1/4 – 1/2 inch of space at the top of the can.
As you pour the wax, you may notice some air bubbles forming. You can use a toothpick or a skewer to pop the air bubbles. This will give your candle a smoother finish.
Step 6: Let the Wax Cool
Allow the wax to cool and solidify completely. This may take several hours, depending on the size of the tin can and the type of wax you’re using. You can speed up the cooling process by placing the tin cans in a cool place, such as a refrigerator.
Once the wax has cooled, trim the wick to about 1/4 – 1/2 inch. This will ensure that the candle burns evenly.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Candle
Your tin can candle with a spiral wick is now ready to use! Light the wick and enjoy the warm, flickering light and the pleasant scent (if you added fragrance oil). These candles make great gifts for friends and family, or you can keep them for yourself to add a cozy touch to your home.
