As a supplier in the field of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) Power Transmission, I am often asked about the testing methods for UHV power transmission equipment. In this blog, I will share some of the key testing methods that we utilize to ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of our UHV equipment. Ultra High Voltage Power Transmission

1. High – Voltage Testing
1.1 Power – Frequency Withstand Voltage Test
The power – frequency withstand voltage test is one of the most basic and important tests for UHV equipment. It is used to verify the insulation performance of the equipment under normal power – frequency operating conditions. We apply a specified power – frequency voltage to the equipment for a certain period of time, usually 1 minute. If the equipment can withstand this voltage without breakdown or excessive leakage current, it indicates that the insulation can safely operate under normal power – frequency voltage levels.
For example, for UHV transformers, we use a high – voltage test transformer to generate the required test voltage. The test voltage value is determined according to relevant international and national standards. During the test, we closely monitor the current and voltage waveforms to detect any abnormal phenomena.
1.2 Lightning Impulse Withstand Voltage Test
Lightning impulses are a major threat to UHV power transmission equipment. The lightning impulse withstand voltage test is designed to simulate the impact of lightning strikes on the equipment. We generate a standard lightning impulse voltage waveform with a steep front and a relatively long tail and apply it to the equipment.
There are two types of lightning impulse tests: the full – wave impulse test and the chopped – wave impulse test. The full – wave impulse test is used to check the overall insulation performance of the equipment, while the chopped – wave impulse test is more severe and is mainly used to evaluate the ability of the equipment to withstand the steepest part of a lightning strike. After applying the impulse voltage, we check if the equipment has suffered any insulation damage by measuring the residual voltage and current.
1.3 Switching Impulse Withstand Voltage Test
Switching operations in the power system can also generate high – voltage impulses. The switching impulse withstand voltage test is carried out to simulate these switching over – voltages. The waveform of the switching impulse voltage is different from that of the lightning impulse, with a lower front steepness and a longer duration.
This test is crucial for evaluating the insulation performance of UHV equipment under switching conditions. We use a special impulse voltage generator to create the required switching impulse voltage. Similar to the lightning impulse test, we closely observe the equipment’s response during and after the application of the switching impulse voltage.
2. Partial Discharge Testing
Partial discharges are localized electrical discharges that occur within the insulation of the equipment. These discharges can gradually damage the insulation over time, leading to insulation failure. Therefore, partial discharge testing is an essential part of the quality control of UHV power transmission equipment.
We use two main methods for partial discharge testing: the electrical method and the acoustic method. The electrical method is based on detecting the electrical signals generated by partial discharges. We use a partial discharge detector to measure the magnitude and frequency of the partial discharge pulses. The acoustic method, on the other hand, detects the ultrasonic waves generated by partial discharges. Acoustic sensors are installed on the surface of the equipment to pick up these ultrasonic signals.
During the partial discharge test, the equipment is usually energized at a certain voltage level. The test voltage is gradually increased to a specified value, and we monitor the partial discharge activity continuously. If the partial discharge level exceeds the allowable limit, it indicates that there may be defects in the insulation of the equipment.
3. Temperature Rise Testing
In UHV power transmission equipment, such as transformers and reactors, the loss of electrical energy will be converted into heat, causing the temperature of the equipment to rise. Excessive temperature rise can accelerate the aging of the insulation materials and reduce the service life of the equipment. Therefore, temperature rise testing is necessary to ensure that the equipment can operate safely at rated load.
We usually use thermocouples or thermal resistance sensors to measure the temperature of different parts of the equipment, such as the windings, core, and oil (for oil – immersed equipment). The equipment is operated at rated load for a certain period of time until the temperature reaches a stable state. Then, we record the maximum temperature rise of each part of the equipment and compare it with the design and standard requirements.
4. Mechanical Testing
UHV power transmission equipment is often subject to various mechanical forces during operation, such as vibration, wind load, and short – circuit electromagnetic forces. Mechanical testing is carried out to ensure the mechanical strength and stability of the equipment.
4.1 Vibration Testing
Vibration testing is used to evaluate the vibration characteristics of the equipment under normal operating conditions and external excitation. We use accelerometers to measure the vibration amplitude and frequency of different parts of the equipment. By analyzing the vibration signals, we can detect any abnormal vibrations that may be caused by mechanical defects or improper installation.
4.2 Short – Circuit Withstand Testing
Short – circuit events in the power system can generate extremely large electromagnetic forces on the equipment. The short – circuit withstand testing is designed to verify that the equipment can withstand these forces without mechanical deformation or damage.
For UHV transformers, we simulate a short – circuit condition by applying a short – circuit current to the windings. During the test, we monitor the mechanical stress and deformation of the windings and other structural parts. If the equipment can maintain its mechanical integrity after the short – circuit test, it indicates that it can safely operate in the power system under short – circuit conditions.
5. Chemical Testing
Chemical testing is mainly used for oil – immersed UHV equipment, such as transformers and reactors. The insulating oil in these equipment plays an important role in insulation and heat dissipation. Over time, the insulating oil may deteriorate due to oxidation, thermal decomposition, and contamination.
We conduct various chemical tests on the insulating oil, including tests for moisture content, acid value, dielectric loss factor, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA). The moisture content test is used to detect the amount of water in the oil, as excessive moisture can reduce the insulation performance of the oil. The acid value test measures the degree of oxidation of the oil, and a high acid value indicates that the oil has deteriorated.
The dielectric loss factor test reflects the dielectric properties of the oil. An increase in the dielectric loss factor may indicate the presence of impurities or degradation in the oil. DGA is a very important test method. By analyzing the types and contents of dissolved gases in the oil, we can detect early signs of internal faults in the equipment, such as overheating, partial discharges, or arcing.
6. Performance Testing under Different Environmental Conditions
UHV power transmission equipment may operate in different environmental conditions, such as high – altitude, high – humidity, and high – temperature environments. Therefore, it is necessary to test the performance of the equipment under these special conditions.
6.1 High – Altitude Testing
At high altitudes, the air density is lower, which affects the insulation performance of the equipment. We conduct high – altitude simulation tests in a high – altitude test chamber. The chamber can simulate the low – pressure and low – humidity environment at different altitudes. By testing the equipment in this chamber, we can evaluate its insulation performance and electrical performance under high – altitude conditions.
6.2 High – Humidity and High – Temperature Testing
High – humidity and high – temperature environments can also have a significant impact on the performance of UHV equipment. We use environmental test chambers to simulate high – humidity and high – temperature conditions. The equipment is placed in the chamber for a certain period of time, and we monitor its electrical and mechanical performance during the test. This helps us to ensure that the equipment can operate reliably in hot and humid regions.

In conclusion, the testing of UHV power transmission equipment is a comprehensive and complex process. By using a variety of testing methods, we can ensure that our UHV equipment meets the highest standards of quality, reliability, and safety.
